Our Ladies of the Dark Forest> SERIES INFO

This series consists of twelve pieces. They are found object sculpture that were featured in an exhibition titled Gnostic Devotions at the Morgan-West Studio/Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana in the fall of 2003.

Ancient in tradition is the devotion to the statue of the Black Virgin whose symbols of power and majesty have survived centuries of war and revolutions. The great age of the Black Madonna was the 12th century, but there is a resurfacing of the pagan goddess of sexuality, the underworld and earth wisdom. They evoke memories of the pre-Christian origins of much in Christianity, the history of the Templars, Catharism, alchemy, and other heresies and secrets. "The return of the Black Virgin to the forefront of collective consciousness has coincided with the profound psychological need to reconcile sexuality and religion." – Ean Begg.
