Brenda Stumpf was born in Parma, Ohio in 1972. She studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design from 1991 to 1993. She was an artist assistant to iconographer Christine Uveges of Eikona Studios for three years, and also worked as a scenic painter for The Cleveland Playhouse and Great Lakes Theatre Festival. Her sculpture, drawings, and paintings have been exhibited nationally and abroad throughout her thirteen year career. Stumpf lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
Stumpf's work is steeped in ancient history, religion, metaphysics and mythology. References in her work have included Pandora, the Black Madonna, Hatshepsut, The Crusades, alchemy, and sacred sexuality. The music of Arvo Pärt and the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Hafiz have been integral influences to the artist. She creates mostly with non-traditional materials and works very intuitively, rarely sketching or preplanning. Elements of her work are like secrets or prayers, suggesting meditations and offerings to love and loss. The artist often feels as if she is distilling the ancient and presenting it's modern counterpart.
Stumpf's sculpture, drawings, and paintings are included in many private collections as well as public which include St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Trinity Cathedral, and The Ellet Library. Her work was recently selected to be included in the premier edition of Studio Visit, a nationally focused juried art catalog by The Open Studios Press, creator of New American paintings. |
